MISSION OF THE UNIVERSITY
The mission of Summit University, Offa (SUN, Offa) is: Providing for the
advancement of learning and the acquisition of sound education enriched with
good morals.
PHILOSOPHY
At Summit University, Offa, we envision the Postgraduate Programme in Mass
Communication as a transformative journey that transcends traditional
boundaries, fostering a dynamic and inclusive environment where scholars engage
in advanced exploration, critical analysis, and innovative practice. Rooted in
our commitment to academic excellence and societal relevance, the philosophy of
our Mass Communication postgraduate programme is guided by the following

AIMS/OBJECTIVES OF THE PROPOSED PROGRAMME
The aim of the Postgraduate Programme in Mass Communication at Summit University,
Offa, is to cultivate a cohort of highly skilled and ethically conscious
communication professionals equipped with advanced knowledge, critical thinking
abilities, and innovative practices. This programme seeks to empower graduates
to navigate the complexities of the rapidly evolving global communication
landscape, contributing meaningfully to scholarship, industry, and society.
Objectives
- To provide learners with a comprehensive and advanced understanding of
theoretical frameworks, research methodologies, and key concepts in Mass
Communication.
- To foster critical thinking skills that enable students to analyze and
evaluate contemporary issues in Mass Communication from multiple
perspectives.
- To instill a strong sense of ethical responsibility in communication
practices, ensuring that graduates uphold the highest standards of
integrity, fairness, and social responsibility.
- To equip learners with the knowledge and skills to leverage emerging
technologies, including Artificial Intelligence and digital platforms, for
effective communication.

Communication.

RATIONALE/JUSTIFICATION FOR ESTABLISHING THE PROGRAMME
The Postgraduate Programme in Mass Communication at Summit University, Offa, is
justified by the need to prepare communication scholars who are not only
responsive to the evolving dynamics of the field but also equipped with the
ethical foundations, technological proficiency, and global perspectives
necessary to excel in the contemporary media landscape. This program is designed
to make meaningful contributions to scholarship, industry, and society at large.
ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS
Post Graduate Diploma (PGD) Programme
All candidates must have five credit passes including English, Mathematics
and three other relevant subjects at ‘O’ Level and any of:
- First degree with a minimum of Third-Class grade in any discipline
from a recognized university.
- First degree with a minimum of Second class lower in any related
discipline from a recognized university.
- HND with at least a minimum grade of Lower Credit in any discipline
from a recognized institution.
Master of Science Programme
All candidates must have five credit passes including English, Mathematics
and three other relevant subjects at ‘O’ Level. Kindly note that:
- Candidates with Bachelor’s degrees from an approved university must
obtain a minimum of second-class lower division.
- Candidates with a university PGD with a CGPA of 3.0/5.0 in any
related discipline may be considered for admission into academic
Master’s degree programmes.
Master of Philosophy (MPhil) Programme
All candidates for MPhil admission must satisfy the following conditions:
- All candidates must have five credit passes including English,
Mathematics and three other relevant subjects at ‘O’ Level.
- Candidates must have an Academic Master’s degree in relevant areas
with a minimum CGPA of 2.5/5.0 and a thesis score not lower than
50%.
Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) Programme
All candidates for PhD admission must satisfy the following conditions:
- All candidates must have five credit passes including English,
Mathematics and three other relevant subjects at ‘O’ Level.
- Candidates must have an Academic Master’s degree in relevant areas
with a minimum CGPA of 3.0/5.0 and a thesis score not lower than 55%
or MPhil degree in the relevant area.
GRADUATION REQUIREMENTS
PGD PROGRAMME
- Expected Duration of Programme
- A full-time Academic PGD’s Programme should run for a minimum of 2
semesters and a maximum of 4 semesters.
- Part-time Academic PGD’s programme should run for a minimum of 4
semesters and a maximum of 8 semesters.
- For extension beyond the specified maximum period a special
permission of Senate shall be required.
M.Sc. PROGRAMME
- Expected Duration of Programme
- A full time Academic Master’s Programme should run for a minimum of
3 semesters and a maximum of 6 semesters.
- Part-time Academic Master’s programme should run for a minimum of 6
semesters and a maximum of 8 semesters.
- For extension beyond the specified maximum period a special
permission of Senate shall be required.
M. Phil. PROGRAMME
- Expected Duration of Programme
- A full time Academic Master’s Programme should run for a minimum of
4 semesters and a maximum of 8 semesters.
- Part-time Academic Master’s programme should run for a minimum of 8
semesters and a maximum of 16 semesters.
- For extension beyond the specified maximum period a special
permission of Senate shall be required.
PhD Programme
- Duration of Programme
- A full time Doctoral programme shall run for a minimum of 6
semesters and a maximum of 8 semesters. However, a candidate holding
a relevant M.Phil. degree can be allowed to graduate in 4 Semesters
(minimum) and a maximum of 8 semesters.
- Part-time Doctoral programmes shall run for a minimum of 8 semesters
and a maximum of 10 semesters.
- For extension beyond the specified maximum period a special
permission of Senate shall be required.
