Welcome Message from the Department of Political Science

It is with great pleasure I welcome you to the department of Political Science, Summit University, Offa, Kwara State, Nigeria.

I want to assure our new learners (students) and reiterate to our old learners that you have chosen the best career, Political Science in the best and fastest growing universities in Nigeria, Summit University, Offa.

Dear learners, you are about to embark on a life changing journey and you will not be the same again at the end of this journey. Reflect on this for a moment, you will experience transformations that will change you in positive ways by the end of your four or three years’ programme in the Department of Political Science.We want you to be open to new experiences. I challenge you to see this semester and your first year as an adventure in learning, growing, self-discovery, and of challenging yourself and others in your teams and class room activities.

The department will continue to expose you to different teaching and learning modalities such as experiential learning, participatory learning, and research based learning within a virtual remote platform. As a student of Political Science Department, you will experience leading presentations, analyzing questions in small break out groups, team work and team assignments, leading your peers, harmonizing ideas, debating, online quizzes, developing effective communication skills and more.

Besides, you will experience what it means to be an active learner-that is, being empowered to speak up in classes, to influence others by articulating ideas, participating in classroom activities, conducting research projects, and having fun while learning. As a student in the Department you will learn how to develop good research skills, how to analyze and critique, how to think about new ways of doing things on many levels, how to develop an academic writing style, and how to use technology to enhance learning in the classroom.

Interestingly, the department houses scholars in different aspects of Political Science, specialising in areas as diverse as Political Theory, Political Economy, Comparative Politics, International Relations, and Public administration. Members of staff in the Department have made, and continue to make, meaningful impact in their teaching, research and community engagements, both within and outside Nigeria.

Finally, I want to leave you with a statement to reflect on as you begin your academic sojourn this semester at Department of Political Science. Make the most of this amazing journey as it will transform your entire life. Remember:

Philosophy of the Department

The philosophy and mission of Political Science as a discipline is to produce graduates with a critical mind, requisite ability and skill to comprehend, analyze, predict and influence the factors that shape and mould power relationships in an ever-changing socio-political environment in a globalizing world; as well as having competence to manage complex relations in the ever changing bureaucracy and growing business environment


Vision of the Department

The Department of Political Science seeks to train, equip and produce graduates with critical minds that will be socially engaged and solution-providers, thus building a world of transformational leaders and innovative managers that will change Nigeria, Africa, and the global communities for better


Objectives

The main objectives of a degree in Political Science are to:

  • Provide training in the principles of Political Science and their application.
  • Stimulate the students intellectually through the programme, in such a way that they understand and appreciate social problems.
  • Provide a solid foundation of knowledge about the workings of society and its institutions and develop the skills for the constructive use of such knowledge.
  • Develop in students, the ability to apply the knowledge to the resolution of societal problems and conflicts.
  • Develop in students, such skills and competency that would allow them to be self-reliant and entrepreneurial.
  • Provide the students with necessary skills for studying and analysing society.
  • Provide the students with the skill-base from which they can proceed to higher studies in Political Science.
  • Imbue in the students a deep appreciation of the political dynamics of society and the impact of this on wider socio-economic development and societal well- being.
